Precautionary saving and partially observed income $
نویسنده
چکیده
I propose an intertemporal precautionary saving model in which the agent’s labor income is subject to (possibly correlated) shocks with different degrees of persistence and volatility. However, he only observes his total income, not individual components. I show that partial observability of individual components of income gives rise to additional precautionary saving due to estimation risk, the error associated with estimating individual components of income. This additional precautionary saving is higher, when estimation risk is greater. Compared with a precautionary agent who is otherwise identical, but ignores estimation risk, the rational agent consumes less at the beginning of his life, but consumes more later, because of larger wealth accumulated from savings for estimation risk. The utility cost of ignoring estimation risk is also quantified in closed form. r 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. JEL classification: D11; D91; E21

Consumption Adjustment under Time-varying Income Uncertainty
We study the effect of income uncertainty on consumption in a model that includes precautionary saving. In contrast to previous studies, we focus on time-series variation in income uncertainty. Our time-series measure of income uncertainty is constructed from a panel of forecasts. We find evidence of precautionary saving in that increases in income uncertainty are related to increases in aggreg...
متن کاملIncome Uncertainty and Precautionary Saving: Evidence from Household Rotating Panel Data∗
This paper analyses precautionary saving associated with income risk. I model income dynamics decomposing the innovation into its idiosyncratic, cohort-specific and aggregate components, as in Banks, Blundell and Brugiavini (1999). However, compared to their repeated cross-sections, I show how my rotating panel (the Spanish family expenditure survey) can be exploited to identify the idiosyncrat...
متن کاملA Possibilistic and Probabilistic Approach to Precautionary Saving
This paper proposes two mixed models to study a consumer’s optimal saving in the presence of two types of risk: income risk and background risk. In the first model, income risk is represented by a fuzzy number and background risk by a random variable. In the second model, income risk is represented by a random variable and background risk by a fuzzy number. For each model, three notions of prec...
متن کاملHealth care quality, economic inequality, and precautionary saving.
We argue that health care quality has an important impact on economic inequality and on saving behavior. We exploit district-wide variability in health care quality provided by the Italian universal public health system to identify the effect of quality on income inequality, health inequality and precautionary saving. We find that in lower quality districts there is greater income and health di...
متن کاملUsing Subjective Income Expectations to Test for Excess Sensitivity of Consumption to Predicted Income Growth
We test for precautionary saving and excess sensitivity of consumption to predicted income growth using a 1989-93 panel survey of Italian households that has measures of subjective income and inflation expectations. These expectations provide a powerful instrument for predicting income growth. The empirical specification controls for predictable changes in labor supply and allows a fairly gener...
